Be in Your Moment

Today, 3 of my buses were cancelled (of which I only needed to get on one) which means I will be late for work, but when the bus finally came I had already run across the street to get a snack. As I was coming out of the door, the bus was nearing my stop. The woman who had been standing with me at that stop began to yell from across the street “come on! The bus is coming!” Now, I had never ever met this woman before in my life but she thought enough of me to catch my attention and tell me that our bus was here. As I started sprinting across the street, a man yelled from behind me and said “you better go girl!” The other men that were standing along with him that I had passed on my way into the corner store started to clap and cheer as I made it to the bus just in the knick of time. I boarded and as I was about to pay, the driver tells me “it’s broken. Don’t worry about it.” I finally make it to the train after having a pretty cool conversation on the bus ride over with the older Jamaican woman who was looking out for me earlier in the day about bank fraud no less (once a Babson student, always a Babson student). Even now as I haphazardly type this on the D train (which is as usual running notoriously slowly) I cant help but feel grateful after the kindness I’ve been shown today. I just sneezed in rapid succession and was just blessed by 3 different people who made it appoint to make sure I heard them.

I say all of this not chronicle my morning, but because it’s a great reminder that

“You are exactly where you are supposed to be.”

I read a story the other day that told of the people who weren’t in the Twin Towers on 9/11. Several people were late that day: one person because she went to answer the phone, another person because their child took a little too long getting ready that morning. At the end of the article was a quote “You are exactly where you are supposed to be. ” on days like today I am reminded of this practice in mindfulness. Had those buses been on time I may not have met that woman, I probably wouldn’t feel so positively about my community today, I may not have saved $2.10, I may not have gotten to ride on a brand new train, I probably wouldn’t have seen an adorable little girl wave goodbye to the train as we pulled away from the Longwood station. So, in this moment I’m grateful for the people who looked out for me, the people who smiled at me, the people who blessed me and I am especially grateful that I am exactly where I am supposed to be.
