Tonight, I went to go see Mockingjay Part I with some friends. The movie was phenomenal. Poignant, powerful, well-structured and above all passionate. On the drive home, a friend casually scrolling through instagram pointed out that it seemed that the Darren Wilson verdict had been passed down. No indictment. Ironically enough, moments earlier we were talking about how crazy it seems theoretically, but is all too easy for the mere stories ripped from the pages of Suzanne Collins’ novels to become a reality. This verdict in my opinion seems like a brick in laying that foundation. A stepping stone toward forging a tomorrow where the one percent becomes the capitol and everyone else simply works to survive- “to fight for a piece of the scraps”. You may disagree, but in my eyes to live in a world where lives don’t matter-we may as well be in The Hunger Games, but in this scenario the ‘competitors’ don’t always have weapons and No One is offering up help. So I now find myself wondering, where is our MockingJay? Where is our revolution? The world is watching, are we going to simply be angry and cause terror and destruction in our wake or are we going to be strategic and fight back? This is the moment to decide. This is the time and this has absolutely got to end. #BlackLivesMatter.
