Immigration and the Politics of Being a Human

This is probably the shortest post that I will ever write, but I think that it is necessary to address certain points that I have seen and heard regarding immigration. Keep in mind that you are certainly free to read this post regardless of your nationality, however this post is mostly geared toward Americans upset with the current structure of the immigration crisis.

1. Yes, America is footing the bill and yes that does fall upon tax payers. Even though the burden does fall upon tax paying citizens, we as people that are able to pay taxes should be grateful that we are capable enough to perform this act.

2. Often times Politicians and policy makers’ pocketbooks are not facing such strain. Instead of being angry and frustrated at those who have naught, it may be a more impactful to attempt to enact policy that encourages those who have not been impacted to donate their dollars instead. You can not force a person to do anything, but you can make your voice heard in order to express your displeasure with the current state.

3. Americans are incredibly privileged to have been born into that way of life. Accept that. Everyone is born with certain privileges and being American is one of them. These people are often afforded the opportunity and way of life to which some are not privy in their native countries. This isn’t a good thing or bad thing, it just is. Understand that had you been dealt a different hand in life, then you could very well be someone attempting to cross the border into the U.S.

4. Remember to be human and remember that those traveling to cross into the U.S. are also human. They are not animals to be discarded regardless of the financial weight.

5. People often say that politics and humanitarian issues are two separate topics, but maybe if we started regarding politics as humanitarian issues then we would create a better world for all inhabitants.
